What did you think of the program? When I first saw they assignment I scratched my head and was like "What the ####? Why would they want us to do that?" But after coding it, I can see why. It's pretty advanced (not REALLY, but you know) even for something so simple. I sent all my source ubercommented, too, just in case.

Just so you know, the advanced web class for session 1, I'm going to be a bit lenient on the programming assignment. Â*All I really want to know about you if you want to apply is that you have previous programming experience (of any kind really) and knowledge of HTML (using a text editor). Â*
So there's one more reason you should sign up for the advanced (all-day) web class in session 1. Â*So there. Â* http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I think Matt was just trying to say how the advanced program is kind of a test whereby which the teachers can gague two things: your ability to code and your ability to do a fairly in-depth algorithm. I must admit on first sight the program doesn't seem all that difficult, but after you get in to it you can see why it was chosen.
In the case of the Advanced Web, Matt really isn't looking for how well you can write C++ but rather that you can step through a problem and find a way to solve it. For the other classes (Advanced C++ and Game development) I'm sure they'll look at coding style a bit more rather than your method.

Yeah, sorry about the confusion. I figured you were talking about session 2 or 3. I just thought that I would add that post for anyone who is curious or looking through the message board. Thanks Greg. http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

if you have figrued it out, the basic idea of the assignment is to gauge whether or not you have the basic grasp of programming. it was a basic problem that we ran into last year actually while teaching the beginner's class. The students who had programmed before, or at least gone through algebra II, were able to understand the concepts and ideas that we were teaching them rather easily, while those who had little to none prior experience were struggling. Therefore, the main thing looked for is whether you can go through a simple programming exercise, so that you can be ready for when we dish out the heavy stuff for ya.
