Most campers usually go to or stay in the labs to play. You can BootCamp your MacBook and run CS that way - something worth looking into.

You can play CS from the dorms on the Camp CAEN servers, but you can't play on a LAN (ie, Warcraft or Starcraft) with other campers in the dorms. (Other than, of course, going into the same room.)

Like Kram said, most campers go to the CSE labs to play after dinner.*

*The Pierpont labs, which is where we used to have class/play games are closed for renovation. So, we get the much nicer CSE labs, which do have better comps.

I wouldn't buy the MacBook soley for camp games - if you have other reasons, dual-booting Windows and OSX may be a worthwhile investment considering OSX's main weakness is mainstream software compatibility. I don't know if the GX620 that the CSE labs are said to have have an add-on graphics card (Radeon X600) or if it uses Integrated Graphics (iGMA950), but in terms of specs and usability, CS is more likely to run better on the lab desktops than a BootCamped Apple. If you'd rather not dish out the cash, remember that you can always BootCamp your system with Windows later on.

Doesn't WinXP cost $15, not $100?

Depends on the type of license. UMich student licenses are around $15 across the board, but OEM copies of general license Windows XP and retail upgrade versions cost 90 USD for XP Home and 130 USD for XP Pro.

If you're looking at better dual-OS integration, take a look at Parallels. It's technically not an "emulator", per se, but supposedly it runs very well on OS X Tiger.

When you're enrolled in college at UMich, you can buy Windows for $15. $14.15 (http://showcase.itcs.umich.edu/catalog-item.php?id=4827), actually. :) I'm planning on getting a Macbook Pro for college this fall, and I'm going to buy a $14.15 WindowsXP for it. :)

Also, for the record, the new Intel Macs (including Macbook Pros) play games extremely well in Windows. I've seen some videos of a mac playing HL2 no problem. It's got a Mobility X1600 inside, IIRC, so it's not that bad all around. :)

I would reccommend doing whatever you can to play CS in the dorms, it's a fun way to talk&play with the other campers. But the computer I brought is old and can't handle CS.

If you have a way to get Windows Xp through the U of M, I would get it, seeing as it's pretty cheap, but if you can't don't shell out the $100 unless you really want XP. You could also get ahold of XP in "other" ways. ;D

It wouldn't let me edit my post, so I'm posting again:
You don't need to be going to U of M to get the discount, if your parents/relatives/someone you know that's willing to bend the rules a bit either goes to or works at U of M, you can get a discounted copy of XP.
