Hey all,
so I've got a lot of the equipment that I'm looking for down (i've decided upon getting the 12" pb at some point over the summer) but I'm looking to make some upgrades to my current workstation. Mainly processor and mobo (and associated memory, ps, etc). I don't need hard drives or cd burners or video cards (i've got equipment that is perfectly fine or what i need). Anyway, it's been a while since I've been in the market for this kind of stuff, and with so much info, it's hard to parse out what is hype, what is lab, and what is good in the real world advice.
that being said, I'm coming to those who both have the time, and the...love of all that is new and exciting (read overpriced) to have a clue as to what is what. Pretty much, I need to know what chipsets and motherboard makers are of any value. I'm looking only at intel (if i can't have 2 physical processors, i can at least have 2 logical) and i'm looking to be able to play games and compile C# code. Pretty basic needs. I don't need built in sound or firewire, just a basic mobo and proc that perform well. Alright, thanks a bunch. Talk to yas later.

Hey stan what's your current mobo and CPU?
and what's your $$$ budget on the upgrade?
(So I can maybe decide on your computer upgrade options...)

btw, what do you mean by 12" pb?
(Sorry, never heard that term before...)

I maybe am able to come up with something that will fit your needs...

My current motherboard and cpus (plural) are as follows:

1 Tyan Tiger 100 based off the intel 440BX dual processor chipset

2 intel pentium 3 700's revision e

4 100mhz dims, each with 128 megs of memory

hmmm....did I say upgrade? Let me rephrase that. I'm not actually going to be doing any "upgrading" per se. Instead I'm looking for a new mobo and proc (or procs) to run my compents (hd,snd card, cd burner, video board, etc). So let's just say, I'm looking for a new Mobo and Proc, and I'd prefer to pay less than 800 dollars for the combo of mobo, proc(s), and 1 gig of memory (i could go as low as 512).

As for the 12" pb, it stands for 12" Apple Powerbook.

As for fitting my needs, it's not that I need something fit, i just need some info on the current state of chipsets and processors. Mainly I want to know what Manufacturers are good and reliable, and what chipsets are worth looking at.

Hope this clears up the confusion

Getting Stan to buy AMD is like getting a dog to meow.

First off, don't hate on the Radeon. But yeah, I really don't like AMD. I think they are of poor quality.

darn.... (sorry, my IE just crashed, killed my whole post...)
Anyways,
NeoTAW,
I'm currently building my OWN PC and my budget is around $300-400.
Here's what I got so far for my PC:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (Retail, $105 from newegg)
BIOSTAR MOBO with VIA KT400 chipset (yea i know, their cheap but great quality from reviews, around $60, main reason is that I wanted a mobo with the VIA KT400 chipset supporting the latest DDR 400 memory.)
and I'm gonna put 512MB DDR PC2100 memory into the machine (upgrade later to faster memory...)
Also I just looked @ the Xoxide cases and their cool but do you know the shipping price from Xoxide? (want to order one, just wondering the shipping price since it doesn't say on their site and some sites OVERCHARGE HUGE on shipping)

Stan,
If you don't like AMD CPU's/mobos then I don't know. I'm more of a AMD/Nvidia guy than Intel/ATI. Also AMD Athlon XP CPU's are MUCH CHEAPER with price vs proformance than their Intel counterparts. http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

i just looked for my packing slip but cant find it
I know it wasnt terrible but it wasnt extremely cheap either. Somewhere in the middle of shipping charges. But dont buy from them if your in Europe or Canada as youll be paying 15-20 dollars for customs ####.

I'm looking to build an (expendable) linux comp. I'll explain the expendable part below ... anyway, forgive my stupidity, but I'm looking at an AMD Duron. That's still x86, right? TIA.

Why expendable? I tried to set up a dual-boot system on my family's comp, then accidentally reformatted the system. I had a week-old backup ... but it took 4 weeks to get Dell to send me some disks (the ones I got /w the comp were corrupted - when I got them). So my family wasn't too happy http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif. I don't care if the comp crashes & burns; I can fix it and I back up regularly. But my family ... are just your average users.

Which speakers?

boilthechicken

herman/kardon 595 speakers (2 satellite, 1 subwoofer). Â*They're off of my p3 700, back from 1999. Â*they're still really good, fine for gaming and other stuff. Â*The only problem with the onboard audio from the motherboard is that it doesn't have a digital output. Â*(at least I don't think)

I had 5 case fans on the thing and I got the feeling that I needed more, so I made a bracket out of acrylic and installed 2 70mm fans in the 5.25" drivebays. Â*It's got 2 red cold cathode lights in it. Â*A fan on the hard drive. Â*I'm going to have to get watercooling by this summer. Â*The cpu fan is really loud.
