I thought a poll may not be the best thing, only because it doesn't leave much for the imagination. Post away http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Seriously though, bringing laser tag back is a good idea... keep posting!

Greg I was in your JavaScript class last year. You talked about possibly creating a BUILD YOUR OWN COMPUTER CLASS. I really hope you do that in 2k3. Please reply if you know anything yet.

A build-your-own-computer class is a great idea. The money you save on computers for years to come by building your own would EASILY pay for camp and then some http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

example - My friend got a POS Sony Viao for $1400 a few months ago. P4 1.7GHz, 256 megs of #### SDram, DVD burner (only good part about it, but burns CDs slowly), and a whopping TNT 2 VIDEO CARD!!!! [/sarcasm] And a 17" monitor.

Now I'm building his sister a computer. Athlon XP 1800+. 256 megs PC2100 DDR Ram. Soyo Dragon Lite KT333 (cheap, and has good on-board sound). ViewSonic 17" monitor. GeForce 2 Ti (not nearly the best, but about halfway between a TNT2 and a GeForce 4 Ti4600. See this chart: http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q2/020418/vgacharts-05.html ) 48/24/48 Lite-On CD burner, 16x DVD rom, and a cool-looking, probably cheaply-built http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif case.

Total? $684. Compliments your friend www.newegg.com. (that's before shipping. Because of the heavy case and monitor, probably an additional $50.

However, I could teach someone about computer parts to buy, as well as how to put them together and install drivers, in one day.

A good way, in my opinion, to do it is to spread the class over, say, a week or half of a week of mini-sessions. It would make minisessions more popular probably, and hopefully finally draw those durn campers away from their endless Counter-Strike playing..........that I participate in. ANYWAY, hopefully the idea materializes - it would be one of the best money-savers out there!!!

that is more a mini session as it wouldnt take that long as it isnt that complex;)

Depends, Nick. Â*Some of the older, more experienced campers may find it somewhat easy. Â*The younger ones with little or no hands-on experience may find it much more challenging.

Its definitely something to think and talk about http://campcaen.engin.umich.edu/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

BTW: Who would pay $1000 (or so) just for a minisession anyway?

I think you couldn't spend more than like a full day on it though. And you might not have to buy the parts you may be able to take apart someones computer. That or maybe use some old parts.

I think we should do it even if it is a mini session. I know a lot of people who really want to take that class.

I never implied that we would actually BUILD the computers in the class. Heck, I'll have my computer at camp (Kows originally built it for me, I've taken it apart and re-built it numerous times), and would be willing to take it apart and do a demo with it at camp.

True geeks roll their own.
However, I don't see much point in any sort of minisession.
You can't really have them build a computer... so what are you going to do? Point at stuff and say "This is a HARD - DRIVE! SAY IT WITH ME!"? Or actually have them unscrew stuff? Perhaps a basic synopsys and a reference to materials on an online A+ course would be in order, but the scope of a one day class is trivial for people who you assume know the basics of computers. Just a thought ^_^

I think it should be covered in a series of minisessions that the camper could sign up for and pay for ahead of time

stretching it into a full class would be make it long and boring. also, if you do it as a minisession more people would be able to do it.

if it turns out to be unfeasible to actually build a computer at camp, then i think someone should demo, like jordan said, and go over where to get the best prices, how to order reliably, what parts are compatible together, etc.

As for other class ideas, i would like to see a php/sql database driven website class
